Podgora
With one foot in the sea and the other up the Biokovo mountain, Podgora holds a special place in tourists' eyes and hearts. This small fishing village has turned into a touristic hotspot lately, and mostly thanks to its position. Blessed by perfect nature all around, Podgora is a paradise for all adventurists. You can go diving, and free climbing all in one day, though we wouldn't recommend it.

Podgora is lively and has a rich history in fishing and agriculture. Make sure you check out some of its great 'konoba' – a Croatian name for family owned trattorias that serve local food and drinks. You'll notice the olive groves in the hills around Old Podgora village – the people of Podgora have always made some of the best olive oil on the Makarska Riviera, and they're proud of their heritage today. Don't forget to drop by the Acinger taste room! You can get to see how the olive oil is made, and taste some fantastic Dalmatian products – olive oil, wines, natural cosmetics, honey, etc.

Other opportunities to taste local produce are Fishermen's Nights and St Vincenco's Day on August 21st, that culminates with a big concert at The Seagull's Wing Monument. Join in on the village parties, participate in traditional games, listen to music concerts and immerse yourself in the life of Podgora.

Finding accommodation will be easy, as you can choose from apartments, countryside villas and hotels, some of which are available through Apollo and TUI travel agencies. For more, check out the Accommodation section of our Makarska Riviera All In free mobile guide – click to download for iOS or Android. You'll find info on best holiday spots, and owners' direct contact info (which will help you avoid unnecessary third-party fees).
Other, smaller villages that gravitate towards Podgora are Drasnice, Igrane and Zivogosce, and they are perfect for family vacations. Don't be afraid to let your kids run around with local children, they will get to know the area better, and make friends for life. Who knows, maybe in 20 years, your kids will bring theirs on a vacation here again. Just sit down and relax. Besides, where else could you cool down a beer in a spring of ice cold fresh water that's right on the beach?
